What does bpost's neutrality policy entail?

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the neutrality policy entail?

bpost asks staff in certain positions that involve direct and regular contact with citizens or customers not to display visible signs of a religious or ideological nature. A “visible sign of religious or ideological nature” refers to any outward visible feature that expresses a religious or ideological belief, either to the wearer or the observer. This can include a cross, kippah, headscarf, turban, secular torch symbol, etc.

By not displaying such signs in customer interactions, bpost adheres to the neutrality principle of public service. It also reinforces the image of bpost as an organization open to all, without adopting any religious or ideological stance. This is crucial for building trust.

The functions concerned are closely related to public service duties entrusted to bpost by law or via the management contract with the State. The following positions are covered by this policy (this list may be updated):

  • Mail carrier
  • Team Leader Collect & Distribution
  • Collect agent
  • Commercial employee
  • Customer advisor
  • Post office manager (small, substitute, medium, large, and maxi)
  • (Senior) Bank & Insurance agent and expert agent
  • General counter clerk
  • MassPost counter clerk
  • Reception employee

For other functions not listed above, religious or ideological signs are permitted provided that:

  • they comply with the law and bpost’s code of conduct;
  • they are not expressions of proselytism, racism, discrimination, or rejection of social plurality;
  • they do not conflict with safety or hygiene restrictions imposed by the Prevention service, and do not increase the risk of workplace accidents.
What is bpost doing in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility?

bpost has always played a significant role in society. We have a duty to lead by example. That’s why we are committed to making our operations, company culture and growth more sustainable.
