Job students who work more than 650 hours will switch to a different status. From now on, you will pay regular social security contributions (13,07%) and withholding taxes will also be deducted from your pay.

FAQ Student Labor
You can do a vacation job with an employer other than the part-time employer with whom you are training. And that outside the hours during which you normally take theoretical or practical classes. Moreover, you will not receive unemployment benefit or integration allowance. If you still want to work for the employer with whom you have followed your training, this is only possible in the summer vacations, during the period in which the traineeship contract does not apply.

Yes, during the summer months (3rd quarter) you can still perfectly indulge in a vacation job. The absolute prerequisite is that you graduate in June.

No. If you graduated or stopped studying before June 1, you cannot work as a student.

Are you a minor? Then you are not allowed to perform overtime. You may work a maximum of 4.5 hours at a stretch. If you do work longer, you are entitled to a half-hour break. If you work longer than 6 hours at a stretch, you are entitled to an hour's rest.
Are you at least 18 years old? How the disbursement of this occurs always contact your trusted AGO office for this.
Is the daily or weekly limit exceeded? Then you will receive a 50% supplement for the overtime.
Do you perform overtime on Sundays and holidays? Then you will receive double the pay; you will receive a 100% supplement for your overtime.

If you are under 16, you may not work between 8pm and 6am.
If you are between 16 and 18 years oldyou may work shifts from 6 am and until 10 pm or from 7 am and until 11 pm.
After a shift, you must get at least 12 hours of rest before starting a new shift.

If you are 18 years or older, you can work both shift and night shifts.

Not yet 18 years old? Then only in certain sectors, such as hospitality, bakery, ... with a maximum of one in two Sundays. For consecutive Sundays, permission must first be obtained from the inspection. On the day before or after a working Sunday, you get an additional day of rest.
Are you 18 years old or older? You can work on Sundays and holidays if it is allowed in the industry in which you are doing your vacation job.

From the age of 18 you may work at night if it is possible in the company where you are employed.

In most cases, no, unless your income is above a certain amount. That amount is adjusted each year. In 2025, the limit is €15,586 gross taxable income. Do you stay below that limit and were withholding taxes deducted as a working student? Then you will get it back through personal income tax. You will receive your tax return automatically as soon as you turn 18. Are you younger? Then request a paper tax return form.

Your gross taxable wages remain below a certain limit. You keep the gross taxable wage after deducting social security contributions (2.71% for job students, 13.07% for work students). For work students, vacation pay also counts.

Up to and including the month in which you turn 18, you continue to receive unconditional child benefit. After that, you must adhere to some conditions to retain the right to child benefit.

From the month you turn 18, the number of hours you work determines your entitlement to child benefits.
As long as you work less than 650 hours (job student status), you retain your right to child benefits.
Do you work as a working student (you exceed 650 hours) and pay regular social security contributions? Then you may work a maximum of 80 hours per month to keep your child benefit.

Do you live in the European Union or a country belonging to the E.E.R.? You follow the same legislation as Belgian students.
Do you live outside the European Union or a non-E.E.E.R. country? Everything depends on the reason for your stay in Belgium. Inform yourself correctly with your local authority.
