Thinking about starting as a flexi-job worker? Good choice. A flexi-job is an interesting way to earn extra income, but you must meet the correct conditions to qualify for the flexi status. Below you can clearly read when you are allowed to work as a flexi.
Are you not retired and currently employed? Then one important basic condition applies:
You must have worked at least 4/5 time (or full-time) for another employer three quarters (nine months) before starting as a flexi worker.
Example:
Do you want to start in October, November or December?
Then you must have worked at least 4/5 time for another employer in January, February and March.
There are also a few additional points to keep in mind:
You cannot do a flexi-job with the same employer where you have your main job.
You cannot do a flexi-job with a related company. For example, if you work permanently for Company A and Company B has the same owner or is part of the same group, they are considered one entity. In that case, you cannot do a flexi-job there, even if the company has a different name.
Self-employed persons and unemployed people cannot work under the flexi status.
Retired people can also work as flexi-job workers. The conditions depend on your situation:
66 years or older?
Then you can start immediately as a flexi worker.
Officially retired?
You can work as a flexi if you meet the following conditions:
You already received a pension payment in the quarter (3 months) before starting as a flexi
You worked at least 4/5 or full-time three quarters (9 months) earlier
Please note: this rule may change from July 2026 at the earliest (subject to new legislation). In the future, the rule may check whether you receive a pension in the same quarter in which you work as a flexi. This change is not final yet.
Retiring soon?
Until you are officially retired, the same conditions as for employees apply. You must therefore meet the 4/5 rule.
Curious how much you are allowed to earn as a flexi, which taxes apply, or in which sectors you can work?
